When a Student May Be Mentally Ill

As a faculty member, I can empathize with Harry Lancaster's confusion about how to handle students' emotional problems ("Not a Counselor," Careers, February 3). Yet, as a historian of medicine and a person with a mood disorder, I'm disturbed by the article's emphasis on the most extreme cases involving criminal behavior and threats of violence.
