When You Just Can't Do It All

To the Editor:

When I saw Simone Schweber's account of her attempts to balance work and family, it felt like she had been reading my mail ("It's All an Illusion," Careers, April 15). As a faculty member dedicated to both family and career, I identified with her often futile attempts. I have struggled to win tenure, get that grant, publish that paper, and teach that incredible class while raising happy and healthy children, being a good partner to my wife, and not going crazy
