When It's Right to Wave the Flag

To the Editor:

It's a shame that officials at some colleges and universities across the country feel a need to downplay the significance of the American flag during a time of armed conflict ("Stars and Stripes, However ... ," Short Subjects, April 11).

Our duty as college educators is to encourage free and open discussions at our institutions on topics like the pros and cons of armed conflict. There is no more important issue. ...

We mustn't lose sight of the fact that
