When Employees Become Parents
To the Editor:
Postdocs need the good will of their mentors to move forward in their careers, something that may take a hit when they ask for maternity leave ("The Laws of Physics," The Chronicle, November 11). Young faculty members face similar challenges with the birth of their children.
Thankfully many universities recognize this, adding a year to the promotion clock for men and women following the birth or adoption of a child. A helpful step, no doubt, but granting agencies
