What to Expect When Professors Are Expecting

To the Editor:

The main point of "Baby, Baby, Baby" (February 28) seems to have been overlooked. That is, what support should an academic department get when one -- or more -- of its members goes on maternity leave (or other medical leave, for that matter)?

As a member of the department featured in the article, I can attest that the issue for us was not about special treatment for our pregnant colleagues. It was about finding a way to address the implicit expectation
