What the Legislation Would Do

  • Authorize an increase in the maximum Pell Grant to $4,500 for the 1999-2000 academic year, followed by a $300 increase in each of the next three years and a $400 increase in 2003-04. The maximum Pell Grant for 1998-99 is $3,000.
  • Increase to $5,000, from $3,000, the amount that financially independent students can earn per year and still qualify for a Pell Grant, and increase to $2,200, from $1,750, the amount that a dependent
