What Students Don't Know, and Who's to Blame
To the Editor:
I read with interest Ted Gup's description of his dissatisfaction with the ignorance of students about current events and the state of the world today ("So Much for the Information Age," The Chronicle, April 11).
It's true that most American students don't know the countries that border Israel. I wasn't exactly certain of them myself in 1979, when I became Newsweek bureau chief in Beirut. But I studied, sought out people who knew more than I did, and learned. I
