What Some Universities Agree to Pay Local Governments in Lieu of Taxes
The Chronicle surveyed 30 top research universities, including many of the wealthiest in terms of endowments, about payments in lieu of taxes or other contributions they make to local governments. Eleven institutions said they did have arrangements to make routine payments, which are detailed below, while others said they provided only occasional payments or other types of contributions (see opposite).
