What Is the Proper Mission of Spanish Departments?

It is certainly refreshing to read an academic article without having to wade through all the appurtenances of scholarly writing -- footnotes, references, citations, etc. -- and still come out with the feeling that the author knows what he or she is talking about. Such is the case with Ilan Stavans's "The Challenges Facing Spanish Departments" (The Chronicle Review, July 29).
