West Virginia Tech Becomes Part of West Virginia U.

The West Virginia Legislature has voted to make West Virginia University Institute of Technology a division of West Virginia University, ending a controversial effort to make the college a freestanding institution, the Associated Press reported. The measure, approved at the conclusion of the 60-day legislative session, would raise faculty salaries at the technical institute, streamline administrative functions between the two colleges, and allow West Virginia Tech to use the university’s bonding capacity to finance capital improvements. Lawmakers also voted to make Fairmont State Community and Technical College a division of Fairmont State University. West Virginia Tech has been a regional campus of West Virginia University for a decade (The Chronicle, July 26, 1996, and September 29, 2000).
