Lily Burana, whose recently released memoir tells the story of “a former punk-rock stripper and her unlikely marriage to an officer in the U.S. Army,” ordered 60 cupcakes for a book signing at the U.S. Military Academy.
Now she has frosting to spare. West Point’s bookstore has called to cancel the April 28 event, her publicist, Scott Manning, said today.
Ms. Burana’s book, I Love a Man in Uniform, is a memoir that describes her life at West Point with her husband, a military-intelligence officer who is stationed there. It is still being displayed and sold on the campus, said Agatha Gerardi, manager of the bookstore. But the book signing was canceled by her supervisor, she said.
“It was just something that was decided on from my officer,” Ms. Gerardi said. “Basically the situation was that we will cancel it at this time and consider it at a later date.”
The supervisor, Jim Flowers, who is West Point’s licensing director, did not respond to a request for comment this afternoon.
Ms. Burana, who is scheduled to visit military bases in Colorado and Washington State during her book tour, declined to speculate about the reason for the cancellation, although she said she was “very sad” and “shocked” to learn of it.
As for the cupcakes, she said, she plans to serve them at a forthcoming book party in New York. —David Shieh
