West Chester U. Cancels Presidential Search

The search for a new president of West Chester University of Pennsylvania has been canceled. In a letter to the campus today, Judy G. Hample, the chancellor of the Pennsylvania State System of Higher Education, of which West Chester is part, said a new search would be started this spring to replace the university’s current president, Madeleine Wing Adler, who plans to retire in June.

Linda Lamwers, provost and vice president for academic affairs at the university, will serve as the interim president.

In the letter, Ms. Hample said that two of the six candidates invited to the campus for interviews subsequently withdrew their names. “For a variety of reasons, and some beyond anyone’s control, the initial candidate pool was neither large nor outstanding in the overall depth of candidates one might expect for a university such as West Chester,” Ms. Hample wrote in the letter.

One reason for the lack of interest may be that Ms. Hample herself is stepping down this summer, and her successor has yet to be named. —Jeffrey Selingo
