Welcoming Needy Students to the Campus

It is a thin wire on which higher education balances the desire for increased enrollment of low-income students and the need to maintain precious rankings used in the solicitation of alumni gifts and the recruitment of top students. Karin Fischer's "Elite Colleges Lag in Serving the Needy" (The Chronicle, May 12) opens the door to a host of questions concerning socioeconomic diversity at prestigious institutions across the country
