Ways to 'Rescue' Reading

I read with great interest Jennifer Howard's article on the recent National Endowment for the Arts report concerning declines in reading proficiency and in reading as a leisure activity ("Americans Are Closing the Book on Reading, Study Finds" (Hot Type, The Chronicle, November 30).
