Ways to Provide a 'Safe Environment' for Classroom Discussions on Sensitive Subjects

When I read the guidelines that Lynn Weber created to help students discuss issues of social justice, I was saddened that what might have begun as a good intention may ultimately have hurt the classroom discourse it was trying to help ("Guidelines for Discussion, or Thought Control?," September 27). I understand the desire to create safe environments to discuss politically and personally charged issues, but I question whether telling students what to believe ultimately
