NEW MEMBERS: Twelve women are among the 72 newly elected members of the National Academy of Sciences, the academy said last week. That's down from the record 19 women elected last year. Membership in the academy is considered one of the highest honors in American science, and members help to write reports on key issues in science that provide advice to policy makers.
