Warriors' Codes in War and Peace

There are many things to respond to in Shannon E. French's essay ("When Teaching the Ethics of War Is Not Academic," The Review, March 21). In the interest of space, I'll just remark on a couple.

First, her contention that there is "a moral difference between intentionally causing civilian deaths and doing so unintentionally as the result of attacks on legitimate military targets" forgets the facts that intentions are next to impossible to determine and that
