Warring Images Help to Fuel the Cultural Clash Over Missile Defense

Sometimes our best guesses come back to haunt us. I thought about that as I watched recent news reports of a failed missile-defense test. In Symbolic Defense, a book I wrote in 1989 about the cultural roots of President Reagan's grand vision of the Strategic Defense Initiative (S.D.I.), I ventured that, even if enthusiasm for missile defense waned as the fervor of the cold war subsided, the concept was so deeply embedded in evocative myths and symbols of our culture
