Vouching for Junior: Some Colleges Seek Recommendations From Mom and Dad

Some college admissions offices are going beyond the usual requests for grades, test scores, and teacher recommendations, and asking the parents of applicants for written assessments of their children.

While few mothers and fathers are inclined to sabotage their offspring’s shot at college, admissions deans say many parents do, in fact, go beyond the usual accolades and provide greater insights into their childrren’s character and interests.

The Newhouse News Service reports that Centre College, in Kentucky, and Smith College, in Massachusetts, are two colleges that offer parents the option of providing recommendations for their children. —Elizabeth F. Farrell

Correction: The original version of this post incorrectly reported that Furman College, in South Carolina, was among the institutions that offer the parent-recommendation option to applicants.
