Virginia Tech's Student Journalists Are Ahead of the Pack

When word got around by 9:30 a.m. on the morning of the shootings that the Virginia Tech campus was on lockdown and a gunman was on the loose, Roland L. Lazenby, a communication instructor, turned to students in his journalism class who were hiding under desks. He told them, "'This is your opportunity to report. You guys are journalism students, and you need to do it,'" says Andrew D. Mager, founder of Planetblacksburg.com, a student-run news Web site.
