Virginia Tech Will Let Students Choose Grading Methods as Classes Resume

Virginia Tech will resume classes on Monday with “broad-ranging discussion” of this week’s events “from various perspectives,” says its provost, Mark G. McNamee.

In a letter posted on the university’s Web site today, Mr. McNamee recommended that students “continue to participate in class activities as part of the Virginia Tech community” as a way of safeguarding their emotional well-being.

He said the university would let students ask their professors to use one of three methods of determining each of their grades. Students can ask to be graded based on work already completed for a course, based on that work and any other assigned work they wish to complete, or based on all the work that would normally have been required.

In addition, Mr. McNamee said, students would be allowed to withdraw from courses until the last day of classes, and would be permitted to leave Virginia Tech without penalty for as much of the rest of the semester as necessary.

Besides the counseling available to students, the university is making counseling available for either individual faculty and staff members or for groups. —Lawrence Biemiller
