Virginia Tech Will Drop 200 Jobs to Deal With State Budget Cuts

Virginia Tech will eliminate more than 200 faculty, staff, administrative, and graduate-teaching positions next year to cope with state budget cuts.

Charles W. Steger, the president of the university, sent a letter this month to people on the campus that spelled out how the institution will handle a 13-percent, or $25-million, cut in the operating funds that state lawmakers have given it for the 2002-3 fiscal year.

Virginia Tech will raise tuition by 9 percent in the coming
