Virginia Governor Endorses Plan to Open New Public Medical School

Gov. Timothy M. Kaine of Virginia and Virginia Tech officials will announce plans on Wednesday to open what would be the state’s fifth public medical school, in order to deal with a shortage of physicians and bolster the economy in the southwestern part of the state, according to a news release issued by the governor’s office today and cited in an Associated Press article. Officials at the Association of American Medical Colleges, including its current and former presidents, have said for years that medical schools needed to increase their enrollments — by as much as 30 percent — to deal with a shortfall in doctors and to prevent would-be physicians from simply going abroad for their training.
