Virginia Commonwealth U. Reports to Accreditor on Improper Degree Award

Virginia Commonwealth University has admitted in a report to its accrediting agency that it improperly awarded a degree to a former police chief of Richmond, Va., where the institution is located, and says it has taken steps to make sure such a situation does not recur.

Two deans resigned during the university's investigation into the matter, which is also under review by the accreditor, the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools' Commission on Colleges.
