Rene Portland, the longtime women’s basketball coach at Pennsylvania State University, has resigned, the university announced today.
Penn State fined Ms. Portland $10,000 in 2006 for what it said were violations of the university’s nondiscrimination policy. A university investigation found that Ms. Portland, who coached the team for 27 years, had mistreated a player who was perceived to be a lesbian.
The player, who is not gay, later filed a federal lawsuit accusing the university and the coach of discrimination. Ms. Portland was accused in the 1980s of saying she did not permit lesbians to play on her teams. The parties reached an out-of-court settlement last month.
“This was obviously a difficult decision,” Ms. Portland said in a written statement today. “I am very appreciative of the opportunity to coach at Penn State, which has become a special place for me and my family. I am proud of what we have been able to accomplish with the Lady Lion program through the years.” —Eric Hoover
