Four poets with academic ties have been named finalists for the 2006 National Book Awards. They are: Louise Glück, who teaches at Yale University, for her collection Averno (Farrar, Straus and Giroux); H.L. Hix, who teaches at the University of Wyoming, for Chromatic (Etruscan Press); Nathaniel Mackey, a professor of literature at the University of California at Santa Cruz, for Splay Anthem (New Directions); and James McMichael, director of the M.F.A. program in poetry writing at the University of California at Irvine, for Capacity (Farrar, Straus and Giroux). The fifth nominee is Ben Lerner for Angle of Yaw (Copper Canyon Press). The winner will be announced at an awards ceremony on November 15.
