Using Globe-Circling Balloon, Scientists Peer Back to the Dawn of the Universe

By lofting a telescope into a looping journey around the South Pole, astrophysicists have detected what amounts to the fetal heartbeat of the universe when it was just developing, more than 10 billion years ago. Studies of that faint pulse provide strong evidence that the universe has a simple, "flat" geometry, rather than being warped with some odd curvature, the international team of scientists reported last week.
