Using Epidemiological Data to Treat Patients

In "Epidemiologists Need to Shatter the Myth of a Risk-Free Life" (The Review, May 23), Philip Alcabes raises several interesting points. However, it must be noted that his viewpoint is that of an academic epidemiologist, and his vision is starkly black and white. As a physician and an epidemiologist, what I see in clinical medicine are many shades of gray.
