Upholding Values in a Civil Society
To the Editor:
D.W. Miller's excellent review of the current state of research and debate about the condition of American civil society points to the need to move on -- to an exploration of the nature of the good society ("Perhaps We Bowl Alone, but Does It Really Matter?," July 16). Implicit in all the works Miller cites is the notion that a civil society is a good society, for the familiar reasons so often cited from Tocqueville on. But the question stands:
