University Presses and Monographs

To the Editor:

I read with great interest Marshall Poe's "E-Publish or Perish" (The Review, May 3). I cannot dispute any of the points that Dr. Poe raises regarding the current state of university-press publishing. What is missing from his essay, however, are the factors that have led to the current practices of "good publishers" -- in particular, the abandonment of the specialized monograph.
