The government of Afghanistan has nominated the chancellor of Kabul University to become the next secretary general of the United Nations. According to the Reuters news agency, Ashraf Ghani, a former finance minister of Afghanistan, is the seventh person nominated to succeed Kofi Annan, whose term expires on December 31. Mr. Ghani, who is 57, is a former adviser to the U.N. and the World Bank. Since stepping down as finance minister, Mr. Ghani has overseen the rebuilding of Kabul University (The Chronicle, January 27).
