Universities Support University Presses

To the Editor:

As much as I appreciate the coverage that The Chronicle gives university-press publishing, I'm afraid I have to disagree with the lead sentence in the January 8 Hot Type column: "Universities nowadays expect their presses to break even, or even to turn a profit."

With all due respect, not true. University presses, like all operating units within any university, are under continuing
