Universities Press for President's Help on GEAR UP

Universities that receive GEAR UP grants are pressing President Bush to retract his call for a budget cut, and instead increase the program's budget for 2002.

Charles B. Reed, chancellor of the California State University System, tops a list of more than 200 college presidents and higher-education officials who have endorsed a request by the Congressional Black and Hispanic Caucuses for a $425-million budget for GEAR UP in 2002, a 44 percent increase.
