Universities Begin Creating a Free, 'Open Source' Course-Management System
Hoping to develop a more flexible way of building World Wide Web pages for their online courses, a group of universities has begun designing a free course-management system whose source code will be made publicly available.
The project, known as the Open Knowledge Initiative, was born partly of frustrations with commercial software for course development. The project's leaders say they hope that their software will supplement, rather than replace, commercial products already installed
