Four days after the governor of Texas took steps to impeach her, the chairwoman of Texas Southern University’s Board of Regents resigned on Tuesday, the Houston Chronicle reported. Gov. Rick Perry, a Republican, had appointed Belinda Griffin to lead the board of the fiscally troubled university four years ago, but she ran afoul of his efforts to restructure its governance and finances when she and her fellow regents refused to step down last month. Governor Perry sought their resignations after a panel recommended sweeping changes at Texas Southern in return for a financial bailout from the state.
Mr. Perry and state lawmakers are negotiating a plan to appoint a new board. The governor’s original plan, to replace the board with a single person, drew concerns that it could threaten the university’s accreditation. The Associated Press reported late Tuesday that the governor had received letters of resignation from seven of the eight other regents.
Critics have faulted Texas Southern for a range of financial problems, most notably the use of hundreds of thousands of dollars in university funds to decorate and upgrade the home of its president, Priscilla D. Slade, who was fired last year and goes on trial in August.
Meanwhile, in a Houston courtroom on Tuesday, jurors heard closing arguments in the trial of Ms. Slade’s chief financial officer, Quintin Wiggins, who has been accused of abetting her lavish spending, the AP reported. —Andrew Mytelka
