USC to Explore Activism Potential of Online Communities
Could virtual worlds like Second Life change the face of philanthropy? The John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation thinks so, and it has recruited the University of Southern California to help investigate.
USC's Center on Public Diplomacy will use a $550,000 grant from the foundation to examine the role online communities can play in fostering real-world activism — and to pave the way, possibly, for future MacArthur grants for worthy virtual projects.
