U.S. Questions Admissions Policies

The U.S. Commission on Civil Rights has called for a greater public debate on whether it is legal or proper for colleges to grant preference in admissions to the children of alumni.

The commission made the recommendation in a new report, "Civil Rights Issues Facing Asian Americans in the 1990's." The report noted that Asian-American students had charged that they lose chances at admission to some elite universities because of the effects of alumni admissions preferences. The Education
