The U.S. Department of Labor told Florida A&M University on Friday that it must reimburse 352 employees who were underpaid by a total of $273,000 because the university did not accurately account for their overtime work, according to the Associated Press.
A university spokeswoman, Sharon Saunders, said that the university had changed how it calculates what employees are owed, and that it is now in compliance with the department’s Fair Labor Standards. “We are committed to making sure that our employees are paid properly and on time,” she said.
The Southern Association of Colleges and Schools put Florida A&M on probation in June, citing financial and managerial problems, which continued after the association took action. Last month the probationary period was extended by at least six months. —Lawrence Biemiller
