Three more Egyptian students who went missing shortly after arriving in the United States on an exchange program were arrested on Thursday by federal authorities. The students, who were supposed to have ended up at Montana State University at Bozeman, disappeared after landing in New York two weeks ago (The Chronicle, August 7). Three were detained on Wednesday (The Chronicle, August 9). Six of the 11 missing students are now in custody.
Two of the latest arrests were in Maryland, according to the Associated Press, and the third was in Chicago. The authorities said the students were being held on visa violations and were not thought to be involved in terrorism. The students’ relatives speculated that they had skipped out of the exchange program to find jobs, which are scarce in Egypt.
