UMass Petition Seeks Withdrawal of Planned Honorary Degree for Bush Aide

More than 1,000 people have signed a petition at the University of Massachusetts at Amherst demanding that it drop plans to award an honorary degree at next month’s commencement to Andrew H. Card Jr., the former chief of staff to President Bush. According to a news blog run by The Republican, a newspaper in Springfield, Mass., the petition was presented this afternoon in the office of John V. Lombardi, the UMass chancellor, but he was not there to receive it. —Andrew Mytelka
