UMass Faculty Votes No Confidence in President and Board Over Planned Shake-Up

Faculty members and librarians at the University of Massachusetts at Amherst, upset over a shake-up in university leadership that calls for their chancellor to retire in a year, voted this afternoon to express a “lack of confidence” in the university system’s Board of Trustees and its president, Jack M. Wilson.

They also voted to ask Gov. Deval L. Patrick, a Democrat, to appoint a commission to look into the actions of the board in crafting a controversial proposal under which the president would lead the flagship campus, in Amherst, in addition to managing the five-campus system.

Mr. Wilson has said that the management changes are part of an effort to create a more efficient system and to raise its standing among public universities. And he has said that the proposal is just one of several potential governance changes that will be considered over the next year.

Faculty members complain that they were not consulted in the drafting of the plans and are upset about what they say is the ouster of their chancellor, John V. Lombardi, who has sometimes clashed with the system leadership. At today’s meeting, they also voted to “insist” that the trustees not take any actions at their June meeting to make changes on the Amherst campus. —Karin Fischer
