UCLA Student Shocked in Taser-Gun Incident Sues University

The UCLA student who was stunned with a Taser gun at a campus library last fall after refusing to show ID has accused the university of violating his civil rights and the Americans With Disabilities Act in a lawsuit filed on Wednesday. The Iranian-American student, Mostafa Tabatabainejad, said in the suit that he had been singled out for his Middle Eastern appearance by campus police officers, who used excessive force on him even after he indicated that he was bipolar, the Associated Press reported.

A harrowing cellphone video of Mr. Tabatabainejad screaming while being shocked repeatedly by security guards inflamed public sentiment when it was posted on YouTube shortly after the November incident. The university is pursuing its own investigation of the matter. In a written statement, UCLA’s acting chancellor, Norman Abrams, expressed “regret that Mostafa Tabatabainejad has filed a lawsuit at this time.”
