UC-Santa Barbara Donates a Patent on a Novel Treatment for a Deadly Disease
Donations of patents are no longer a rarity in higher education. The University of California at Santa Barbara, though, is one of the few institutions on the benefactor's end of such a transaction.
The university has given away its patent rights to a technique for treating schistosomiasis, a tropical parasitic disease that each year afflicts some 200 million people in the developing world and kills about 200,000 of them.
