U.C.-Irvine Settles Transplant Suit

The University of California has paid $7.5-million to settle 35 claims filed on behalf of patients who sought liver transplants at the university's Irvine campus, according to a lawyer for the plaintiffs.

The lawyer, Lawrence S. Eisenberg, said the patients had waited for lifesaving transplants at the campus's medical center and did not know that the transplant program there lacked the staff to perform the surgery. While they waited, a number of the patients died.
