The University of the Pacific will announce this afternoon that it will receive a $100-million estate gift from a current and a former regent.
The donors, Robert C. and Jeannette Powell, are announcing their pledge now so it can be part of the 6,000-student university’s current fund-raising campaign for scholarships and facilities enhancements. The specific use of the gift has not been decided, but will create a fund in the Powells’ name.
A friend of the couple who is a regent emeritus at the university encouraged the Powells to become involved with the university about 20 years ago. Mr. Powell was a regent from 1989 to 1993. Mrs. Powell was appointed to the board in 1999 and is still a member.
“Bob and Jeannette have been longtime supporters of Pacific and education in general,” said Donald V. DeRosa, the university’s president, in a written statement. “Our goal is to make the University of the Pacific the most distinctive, student-centered national university in the West.”
The gift will increase the total of the university’s campaign to more than $325-million. The original goal of the effort, which is scheduled to end in October, was $200-million. —Erin Strout
