U. of Wash. to Improve State of Animal Lab

The University of Washington said it would spend at least $20-million to upgrade its animal-research facility, particularly one older building, after an animal-care accrediting organization put the university on probation.

The independent, nonprofit group, the Association for Assessment and Accreditation of Laboratory Animal Care International, evaluates more than 700 research facilities that house animals.

An inspection by the group inJune found that the building then housing
