U. of Utah Students Can Request New Roommates if Theirs Have Guns

Students at the University of Utah may not be able to request unarmed roommates, but if they discover their roommates have concealed-weapons permits, they can ask to be reassigned, The Salt Lake Tribune reported today.

According to a bill the university and the state hammered out this year, the “gun-free roommate” policy is supposed to allow for advance requests. But administrators have not systematically tracked which dormitory residents have concealed-weapons permits because that information is legally confidential, the Tribune reported.

“If a police officer asked me, I would certainly show them my permit,” a student told the local newspaper. “If it was an administrator, I would say, ‘It’s none of your business.’”

Interpretations of the confidentiality rule differ, however. University officials say that it applies only to the release of records, and that they should be able to ask students if they hold the permits.

The “gun-free roommate” bill was a response to the Utah Supreme Court’s decision last year to strike down the university’s gun ban. Administrators say they don’t know of any dorm residents who hold concealed-weapons permits. But they left the question off dorm applications to avoid alarming students, the vice president for student affairs told the Tribune. —Sara Lipka
