U. of Toledo's President Calls for Major Restructuring of Athletics Program

It hasn’t been a pretty year for the University of Toledo’s athletics program. This past spring the FBI announced it was investigating an alleged point-shaving scandal involving a Toledo football player. Charges in the case were later dropped. But then another football player, this one carrying a gun, broke into an off-duty police officer’s house looking to settle a dispute with a teammate.

This month the local newspaper, the Toledo Blade, found numerous examples of questionable spending by the athletics department. That report, as well as the legal problems athletes have encountered, led Lloyd A. Jacobs, the university’s president, to order a major restructuring of the athletics program, the Blade reported today. —Brad Wolverton
