U. of Texas at Austin Honors Victims of 1966 Shooting

More than three decades after a sniper killed 17 people at the University of Texas here, witnesses to the shootings returned to the campus this month to help dedicate a garden that honors those who suffered in the attack.

On August 1, 1966, Charles Whitman climbed to the top of the 200-foot tower, located at the heart of the university, and opened fire on those below. Whitman was then killed by officers.
