The University of Tennessee has agreed to pay $175,000 to a former president, John Shumaker, to settle a severance-pay dispute, the Knoxville News Sentinel reported.
Mr. Shumaker stepped down in August 2003, after only 14 months on the job, amid allegations of financial and ethical improprieties. He later sued, saying he was owed nearly $425,000 in severance pay — $249,800 from the university and $173,156 from its foundation. The $175,000 settlement resolves the university’s portion of the lawsuit but not the foundation’s, Mr. Shumaker’s lawyer told the Knoxville newspaper. —Charles Huckabee
